Zig to the Zag

I'm probably about the millionth person to blog about the ubiquitous chevron pattern, but I can't help myself. There are certain patterns or design trends that I see everywhere and grow so tired of (e.g. Kelly Wearstler's Imperial Trellis), but no matter how many chevron patterns I see, I still think they are interesting and beautiful and I love to see the many different ways that this pattern is applied to a wide variety of furnishings and fashion. Here is a little collection of my favorite zigzags.

Beach House Face Lift

This is what my desk looks like when I'm in the middle of helping a client update her beach house. I think I'm a little pattern obsessed. Now I'm just trying to figure out if that's a good thing or not.

Home Fabrics - Santa Ana

I love shopping the garment district in downtown LA, but unfortunately it's a little far from Orange County to go as often as I would like. I have really only found one or two alternatives to the garment district here in Orange County and one of those is Home Fabrics on Bristol in Santa Ana, just down a few blocks from South Coast Plaza. It's definitely not the fabric Mecca that you would find in downtown LA, but you really can't beat their prices; pretty much everything is in the $1-$6/yd range.

I'm working on a teenage boys room and I was looking for a black and white bargain. You have to dig a little, but sometimes you'll across some gems. I didn't find the black and white I was looking for, but I couldn't say no the this heavy weight linen, I loved the color and pattern. Only $3/yd...

Also a great place for velvets, solids, and stripes...

For all of those DIYers out there, Home Fabrics is having an upholstery class this Saturday. I'm going up to Northern California for a wedding and to visit the San Francisco design house and I'm so bummed that I'm going to miss it.

Modern Rugs by Laura Kirar

Laura Kirar has a hip line of hand made modern rugs at Tufenkian. All 9 rugs in the collection are pretty stellar, here are a few of my favorites... they have a little bit of an 80's vibe, which I really kind of love right now.

10% off Quadrille

For the month of February Quadrille's LA showroom is offering 10% off of fabrics and wallcoverings. You need to order through a designer, just mention the promotion and you'll receive 10% off your order. Pretty sweet deal. I love Quadrille's different collections. It's the perfect mix of funky sophistication. Here's a sampling of Quadrille's popular fabrics...

Ikat Textiles

Ikat fabrics have been a big trend for a while now and one that I'm quite fond of. Almost all of the big name fabric houses have their own versions and colors of ikat, but Uzbek - Craft is a little bit more of an authentic approach to filling your ikat needs, coming all the way from Uzbekistan. The textiles aren't as wide as a regular yard of fabric, but they are still great for making pillows or adding detail to a piece of furiture or drapery. The prices are great too, at just around $12 per textile.

Orange County's own Barclay Butera is now offering online shopping for pillows and accessories with free shipping through December 23. Barclay Butera furniture is not currently available for purchase online but the site is still great for viewing his furniture collection.

Barclay Butera currenlty has showrooms in Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Park City, and New York.

Below are some of Barclay's pillows now available online...

Romo Fabric

I jogged on over to the designer tag sale this morning and scored a yard of this Romo fabric for just $10. I'd say it was a success!

On To The Dining Room

This week I was excited to start working on the dining room of a current client who I posted about previously here. We're still working with coppers, chocolates and touches of red and we're using a lot of texture and a little bit of glam.

My client requested a built-in banquet on one side of the table. I loved the idea so we ran with it. Here are some quick drawings of what we plan on doing.

We're planning to build storage below the bench cushion for holiday dishes and other items that don't get used very often and then open glass shelving above for more every day glassware and dishes.

With all the espresso wood being installed with the built-in I wanted lighter drapery to add contrast. I fell in love with this silk fabric (below) and it inspired the rest of the fabric selections and color pallet.

For extra texture we're using this gold and chocolate grass cloth on the ceiling.

I'm in love with this dining table. The hammered polished nickel pedestal base is a perfect fit. The metal adds another texture and it's a pretty contrast to the dark rosewood top.

Of course, no dining room is complete without a chandelier.

LA Fashion District

I had to go back to LA today to check on a custom table I'm having made for a client. The shop was just a few miles from downtown so I decided to stop by the Fashion Disctrict and see if there were any deals to be had. The Fashion District is great for a few reasons:

(1) It's really really inexpensive. Fabric prices range from $2/yd-$20/yd.

(2) You don't have to wait or pay for shipping, you can take it home with you right then and there.

(3)You get to haggle. Today I had a shop owner come running after me when I was leaving and brought the price of a pink leather hide down $50 from her original offer. How could I possibly say no to pink leather? (see photo below)

Sometimes you can score big on a great print, but if you're looking for a solid velvet or linen, you can almost always find what you need. Below are some photos of some cool stuff I came across today.

If you're new to the fabric district and looking for good upholstery or drapery fabrics, I recommend starting with Michael Levine (great prices, helpful workers, and tons to choose from), Castle Fabrics (great for scoring knock off well-known prints-Windsor Smith, KWID, etc., or just great prints in general), and Home Fabrics Inc. (good for silks and velvets).
